Choosing Finishes: Color, Door Style, and Hardware
Finishes are where a storage system starts to feel like part of the house. Here is a simple way to narrow down colors, fronts, and hardware without second-guessing.

Once the layout is settled, the finish decisions arrive all at once: the color of the panels, the style of drawer and door fronts, and the hardware. Taken one at a time, they are much easier to make.
Start with the room, not the sample
Look at what the storage will sit beside. Trim color, flooring, and the doors in the rest of the house are a better guide than any single sample in isolation. White and soft neutrals keep a closet bright; woodgrains add warmth; darker colors make a dramatic dressing room.
Pick a door and drawer style
- Flat fronts are clean and contemporary, and let color do the work.
- Shaker fronts have a recessed center panel that suits traditional and transitional homes.
- Slim Shaker keeps the frame detail with a narrower border for a lighter, modern look.
Treat hardware as jewelry
Hardware is small, but you touch it every day. Match the finish to nearby fixtures for a calm look, or contrast it on purpose. Longer pulls are easier to grab on wide drawers; knobs suit smaller doors.
See it in person
Colors shift under different light, so we always recommend seeing samples in person. Explore the finish library, then visit the Appleton showroom to compare full-size displays.
