A practical starting point for seeing where a basic shelf-and-rod closet is wasting capacity.

Start with the wasted band above the shelf
A single shelf-and-rod layout usually leaves a large volume of vertical space unplanned. Upper shelves can hold seasonal and occasional items, while the daily zone stays within comfortable reach.

Separate short and long hanging
Most wardrobes contain far more shirts, jackets, and folded pants than long dresses or coats. Dividing hanging by garment length can create a second usable level without crowding the longer pieces.

Give shoes and folded items dimensions
A vague “shoe area” or “some shelves” is rarely enough. Count categories, note tallest items, and decide what should be displayed versus contained.

Design for the door opening
Reach-in systems must respect the actual opening. Drawers, baskets, and shelves should be positioned where doors do not block them.
